The police have completed their investigations into the 2014 murder of waitress Debra Blackman and the case file is expected to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) today for legal advice.
This is according to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum who said that the suspect, Shelton George called ‘Boorie,’ who was arrested last Wednesday at his mother’s Better, Hope, East Coast Demerara home remained in custody.
The police, acting on information received, arrested George, who is now confined to a wheelchair.
Blackman called ‘Debbie’ of Critchlow Circle, Tucville was shot and killed on August 23, 2014 in what police believe was a botched robbery.
The gunman had walked into the Delicious Restaurant on D’Urban Street, between Hayley and Hardina streets, and shot Blackman who was preparing to hand over food that was ordered.
Seconds after the shooting, the man was seen walking out of the restaurant and he subsequently jumped onto a CG motorcycle which sped off.
The mother of five sustained a single gunshot wound which entered her body through her neck and passed out through her shoulder. She died moments after being shot.
In November 2014, police had released surveillance footage showing the suspect committing the act but were unable to apprehend him.
The footage showed a young man, dressed in a grey t-shirt, dark coloured pants and a red cap, entering the restaurant and standing by the counter. He was the shooter. The man remained standing at the counter and could be seen constantly glancing around. Though he was wearing a cap, at several points his face could be clearly seen.
Stabroek News was told that the suspect had fled to neighbouring Suriname where he was shot, resulting in him becoming disabled.
