The police on the Essequibo Coast are conducting investigations into a fatal accident that occurred on Sunday, at Airy Hall, Essequibo Coast.
Dead is 17-year-old mechanic Iftikar Ishmael of Lot 36 Vilvoorden, Essequibo Coast.
According to information, Ishmael was on his motorcycle heading to Suddie when a truck drove out of a gas station at Airy Hall and struck him. He was pitched from the motorcycle and landed several feet away under old scrap material the road shoulder.
However, Police Commander of ‘G’ Division, Superintendent Khalil Pareshram yesterday told this newspaper that the truck, GNN 6695, driven by Balwane Mohabeer of Lot 52 Zorg, Essequibo Coast was proceeding west of Man Man Gas Station while the motorcyclist was proceeding north along the western side of the public road. As he approached the gas station, he lost control and drove over onto the eastern side of the road and crashed into the lorry on the front left side, the commander explained.
Ishmael was picked up by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
This publication was unable to ascertain if the driver of the truck rendered assistance.
Farnaz Ishmael, the sister of the dead teen, said that around 7.30 pm on Sunday they received a telephone call informing her family of the accident.
“Someone came by our home, but the person asked for my father or my grandfather and none of them were at home at the time and the person didn’t tell us exactly what happened other than Iftikar was involved in an accident,” she said. “My mother got worried and called Iftikar’s phone but it went straight to voicemail. Then we received the call about the accident and that he was taken to the Suddie Hospital.
“My mother left home immediately and when she reached the hospital, my brother wasn’t dead as yet but then a few minutes later, the doctors informed her of his death.”
Ishmael said her brother reportedly sustained severe head injuries and his legs and arms were broken.
The driver of the truck is in police custody assisting with investigations.
