A Paramakatoi man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with chopping a fellow villager over to a land dispute.
Georgetown Magistrate Leron Daly read the charge to Lawrence Gomes alleging that on January 29, at Paramakatoi Village, he unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on Rawlinson Robin.
The defendant was not required to plead to the charge as Police Prosecutor Kevin London told the court that the complainant remains hospitalised.
It was reported that Robin contacted Gomes while he was walking through their village, resulting in an argument over land. During the argument, Gomes allegedly became very angry and dealt the complainant a chop to the left side of his face.
It was not stated what Gomes used to inflict the chop.
Gomes was denied bail by the magistrate, who adjourned the case until February 13.
