A second half hat-trick from Delroy Dean, the first of the tournament, propelled Mahaica Determinators to a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Riddim Squad when the second annual Petra Organization/Limacol football tournament continued Sunday.
Trailing 0-1 at the Victoria Ground after Rolex Smith scored in the fifth minute, Dean made his presence felt in the 69th minute from the penalty spot, placing the ball under the goalkeeper into the lower left corner.
He had been requested to retake the penalty which was initially converted due to the encroachment of the spectators.Dean then pushed Mahaica into the lead in the 88th minute, sending the large crowd into a frenzy by slotting into the left corner, after an Eion Abel shot from 35 yards out was parried into his path.
The unlikely comeback was sealed in the 90th minute when Dean completed his hat-trick, placing his effort into the lower left corner, after a loose ball fell into his path.
Mahaica now sits atop the group-D standings with four points while Riddim Squad drops to the cellar position with one point.
Meanwhile, Ann’s Grove made a perfect night for the East Coast of Demerara teams, edging Pouderoyen 2-1 with Ryan Seares netting the game winner from the penalty spot. Awarded the spot-kick following a handball infraction, Seares made no mistake as he placed his right foot shot into the right corner.
Earlier, Maxton Adams handed Ann’s Grove the lead in the seventh minute, heading the ball past the advancing defender while racing into the right of the box, before lashing a powerful effort into the left corner past the advancing goalkeeper.
However, the West Demerara unit fashioned the equalizer in the 35th minute through Quessey Alleyne whose powerful strike went into the roof of the net after the ball was parried into his path from a right side free-kick.
Ann’s Grove now sits atop the group-C standings with four points while Pouderoyen remains in the cellar position without a point. The tournament resumes tomorrow at the GFC ground Bourda.
