A differently-abled man from Bush Lot Village, Corentyne, is now dead after the driver of a Guyana Beverage Company truck accidentally reversed over him yesterday morning.
Dead is Ganpat Ganpat, 38, of Lot 298 Bush Lot Village, Corentyne.
Stabroek News was told that Ganpat was unable to walk and speak.
According to Traffic Chief of ‘B’ Division Boodnarine Persaud, the truck was parked facing the western side along the Bush Lot public road. Persaud noted that the driver was in the vehicle, with a porter at the back, while a salesman who was travelling with them was outside. “The driver was called upon by the salesman, who was outside of the vehicle.
He started to reverse and he collided with a pedestrian, who was in an almost sitting position on the road,” he said. “According to our information, the pedestrian, he cannot walk, he cannot speak, he does be doing frog hopping on the road, he does always be in the road corner soliciting financial help,” Persaud added.
Meanwhile, relatives of Ganpat are calling for the police force to thoroughly investigate. According to them, Ganpat, who was at the corner of the road, did not deserve to die the way he did.
“Me want justice for him, he been deh till in the corner,” Ganpat’s sister, Yopattie Ganpat, said. “Everybody get foot. That is his hobby, they can’t fault him, he been deh till pon the parapet, the police them see where he get knock down,” she added.
The accident occurred at around 8.30 am yesterday, however Ganpat was picked up and rushed to the hospital about one hour after being hit, his sister relayed.
She further stated, “By time he deh suffer, me take water and wipe out he face. When he a go he just froth and then he collapse.” Ganpat was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port Mourant Hospital.
Father of the now dead man, Ganpat Chunoo, stated that his son would usually go on the road. “He does deh till bottom sit down and somebody been go buy something for him at the shop, by the time that one juice truck reverse and mash he,” the grieving father said.
Stabroek News was told that the truck is in the police force’s custody, as is the driver.
