MANAGER of the Little Rock TV Communications and Hotel proprietor Rockcliffe Christie is calling for a working relationship among TV Communications operators in Guyana for the benefit of all Guyanese. Christie of Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam, Berbice, an Engineer by profession has recently completed TV Communication installations and is broadcasting on Channel Ten with signals reaching as far as Black Bush Polder and some areas of West Coast, Berbice.
Christie’s call came amidst criticism from an established operator Tony Vieira, that his operation is meant to frustrate Vieira’s operation. Christie argues this is not his motive and says he feels obligated to provide such a service to his community at a personal cost, which he sought to do five years ago, while seeking to boost his own hotel business.
Christie contends Berbice can accommodate more than one channel and should not be held at ransom by one TV operator. Christie, who lived in England for ten years where he qualified as an engineer, has spent in excess of US$37,000 so far on equipment and another $2M for a Lister stand-by generator bought for the new service. He plans to improve his operation in the near future and expects his signals to reach Crabwood Creek. He plans covering a number of local events. The operation is manned by a six-man staff.
A number of residents and the business community have welcomed the new service and noted that it could go a far way to improving the standard of living in the ancient county.
Advanced Turboprop on show at Timehri reception
BRITISH Aerospace Friday treated Guyana’s public and private sectors to a Timehri airport recepation designed to demonstrate the advantages of Advanced Turboprop (ATP), the latest in aerodynamics.
This visit, the second in 18 months, is part of BA’s marketing programme to woo the Caribbean as individual clients and as LIAT shareholders and South America.
Among invitees at the reception were Ministers Kranenburg, Sawh and Greenidge and members of the British High Commission. Also on the agenda was a two hour return trip to Lethem laid on for select invitees.
The six month old 64-seater, in production for four years, an improvement on LIAT’s HS748s and on offer at US$13M, touched down at the Timehri International airport Friday at 12:30pm on a stop over from Belem, Brazil. It was scheduled to depart for Trinidad that evening.
During the flight to Lethem, Minister Sawh, was enthusiastic over possible advantages of the aircraft for inter-regional cargo and tourism, deeming it “a jet ride on a turboprop.”
Minister Jules Kranenburg, responsible for Public Works, Communications and Regional Development later expressed the opinion, however, that with Guyana having to concentrate on international routes Miami, New York and Toronto this type of aircraft may not be suitable. “This is a short range aircraft as opposed to jets more suited to long hauls,” he told Stabroek News during a chat on the flight.
“If Guyana were interested in building up an inter-regional airline, it would be fine,” Kranenburg said, “but we are already shareholders in LIAT It doesn’t make sense.” He also referred to the development of the road to Brazil.
