A butt to the head and a ‘lash’ with a cutlass landed a miner in court, charged with assaulting a fellow miner.
Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday read a charge to Elvis Benjamin which stated that on February 5, at Omai Backdam, he unlawfully assaulted Sherwin McCalmon, causing actual bodily harm.
Benjamin pleaded not guilty to the charge.
According to facts read by Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves, both men, on the day of the incident, were in the process of weighing raw gold when an argument ensued, and the defendant gave the complainant a butt to the head and lashed him with a cutlass.
Subsequent to the reading of the facts, Magistrate Latchman granted the defendant $100,000 bail.
The matter will be called again on February 16 and will be heard by the Chief Magistrate.
