Demico cook Alexis Turpin and her lover Stephon Barlow, who are charged with fatally beating her partner in July, 2016, were yesterday committed to stand trial for the crime.
Turpin and Barlow are accused of murdering Sherwin Johnson on July 2nd, 2016, at Georgetown, by using a crowbar to unlawfully and maliciously wound him.
The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the charge against them, which was conducted by Magistrate Renita Singh, saw both defendants giving closing submissions yesterday.
In their submissions, Turpin and Barlow attempted to discredit the prosecution’s witnesses, while asking the court to believe that they were innocent and were being victimised by the police.
However, Police Prosecutor Adduni Inniss urged the court to not believe the evidence presented by both defendants, while arguing that they would have lied countless times. She asked the court to believe the evidence led through the prosecution’s witnesses, whom she stated were believable and reliable.
Subsequently, Magistrate Singh told the court that she believed that the defendants acted together during the unfolding of the crime and that there was sufficient evidence for them to stand trial for the murder.
Both Turpin and Barlow were then committed to stand trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes to be held at the High Court.
