A second person has been arrested in connection with the murder of Leilawatie Mohamed, the Tain, Corentyne mother of four who was shot dead in her home, even as police have uncovered more evidence that suggests that she was the victim of an execution and not a robbery.
“It’s looking more and more like that’s what it is,” Commander of ‘B’ Division Ian Amsterdam told Stabroek News yesterday afternoon.
Amsterdam noted that the first person who was arrested, a barber also of Tain, Corentyne, would be released yesterday on a substantial amount of station bail. The man had been taken into custody during the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
Amsterdam added that a second person was placed in custody as of yesterday. Amsterdam explained that the second suspect is a tattoo artist, of Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, who is a suspected accomplice in the crime.
Stabroek News was told that it is believed that Mohamed was involved with a married man, also of Tain, Corentyne, and whose overseas-based wife is being seen as a suspect in her death. The woman is believed to be in the country and investigators are working on locating her for questioning.
Mohamed, a domestic worker, was shot at close range in her Lot 149, Sixth Street home around 11.45 pm on Tuesday night by two men who broke in and demanded cash. After Mohamed told the men she did not have any money, the gunman placed his weapon to her chin and shot her dead.
An autopsy revealed that the forty-five year old woman died from shock and haemorrhage due to gunshots wounds, laceration of the brain and a fractured skull.
Mohamed’s 20 year old daughter and 18-year old son were home during the attack.
