The 28-year-old mother and two of her three minor children who were taken to the Georgetown Public Hopsital (GPH) on Friday afternoon displaying symptoms of poisoning are said to be out of danger.
This is according to a relative, who told Sunday Stabroek that the food vendor is now a patient in the hospital’s female ward in a stable condition. One child is still in a critical condition while the other two are said to be out of danger.
It was sometime after 12.30 pm on Friday that the children were rushed to the GPH from their Bare Root, East Coast Demerara home, while vomiting profusely. After medical officials diagnosed poisoning, they were joined by their mother, who was discovered frothing from the mouth. The children father was not present as he is said to be working in the interior.
While it is unclear exactly what occurred, residents in the area had related hearing loud sounds coming from the house during the wee hours of Friday.
By daylight Friday, it was evident that the woman had destroyed several household items, which were seen broken outside the house. Among them was a broken television set and a kerosene stove.
A resident, who did not wish to be named, said she returned home from work on Friday and learnt of what transpired. “About 1, 2 o’clock this morning, I hear she did bruking up in there but I didn’t hear any screams or so,” the woman said.
She said she had noticed a change in the woman’s behaviour recently. On Thursday, she said, the woman, who usually sells food until afternoon every day, packed up and went back into the house before the lunch hour.
The woman had previously attempted to end her life. An investigation has since been launched by the Child Care and Protection Agency.
