Parking rates to be cut by 50% – Mayor

Mayor yesterday announced plans to slash parking rates by 50%. At a meeting yesterday with members of the commercial banking community, Chase-Green said the rates would possibly be reduced to a rate of $28 VAT inclusive for 15 minutes or just over $100 per hour.

Second major power shutdown in two days

After a shutdown in the Demerara Berbice Inter-connected System (DBIS) resulted in large parts of the country being plunged into blackout on Sunday night, a second incident on the system yesterday resulted in large parts of Georgetown and other areas experiencing a shutdown for several hours.

Volleyball federation AGM set for February 25

By Royston Alkins The Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) is set to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) February 25 at Olympic House, Kingston, Georgetown and the federation has invited all three area associations, with Berbice and Demerara confirmed to attend while there is some cloud over the participation of Essequibo, who has been inactive over the years.

Aurora heritage site should be preserved

Dear Editor, I had planned to visit one of the oldest sugar estate heritage sites here on the Essequibo Coast, with Mr Tota  Mangar and Dr James Rose ‒ both are historians ‒ some 15 years ago when both men and I were at the  Devonshire Castle Martyrs’ Day wreath-laying  ceremony where 5 sugar workers were brutally gunned down in 1879.

Dear Editor It was noticeable that the AFC arm of the coalition government, whose representative sits on the city council in the form of the Deputy Mayor, who has been vocal on the parking meters and the manner in which this project was rolled out, was not at the meeting between government and city officials recently.

It is probably not surprising that quite a few commentators on the unfolding parking meter saga have alluded to the role which public protest has played in the evolution of the issue.
