The Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) Annual Lenny Shuffler Open volleyball tournament was last evening interrupted by the Guyana Power and Light’s continuing electrical issues.
At the time of the power outage, Castrol Strikers female volleyball club was up against Vanguards Volleyball Club in the female final. Castrol at that point had already won the first set 25 – 23. Vanguards bounced back nicely to take the lead in the second set and was looking to setup an exciting final game but GPL had other ideas. Both teams have agreed to replay the second set.
In the earlier female encounters, Vanguards VC defeated Linden VC in two games 25 – 22 and 25 – 16. Linden, who endured a winless evening, had their second defeat when they played against Castrol Strikers. That match ended in another defeat 23-25 and 17-25.
The male category saw a number of exciting encounters throughout the evening. In the first game, Castrol Strikers VC defeated Vanguards VC 25 – 13 and 25 – 16. Then Young Achievers VC of Pouderoyen got the better Wismar of Linden 25 – 19 and 25 – 6. Wismar VC lost their second encounter when Vanguards VC prevailed over the Lindeners (after they won the first set 25 – 14.) Vanguards came back to win the next two sets 25 – 21 and 15 – 7.
The final preliminary match saw Young Achievers defeating Castrol Strikers, 25 – 23 and 25 – 13.
Strikers will have the opportunity to redeem themselves when the same two teams meet in this evening’s final. Strikers member Shane Jones, was confident that his team will be rebounding in tonight’s final. “We defeated them in the last tournament and we are going to destroy them again. They were shocked at how much we improved. Tonight, we made stupid mistakes and lost that game,” he added. The Georgetown versus West Bank final should present a gripping contest. The tournament was sponsored by Shuffler himself who was previously at the helm of the federation.
