A fisherman was yesterday afternoon beaten to death at Ruby, East Bank Essequibo, allegedly at the hands of a regional councillor and two of her relatives after he reportedly attempted to snatch her handbag.
Dead is Shereffudeen Nazamudeen, called “Sheriff,” 22, of Lot 117 Ruby, East Bank Essequibo. He sustained several injuries about his body and was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he subsequently died.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed the fatal beating, which occurred around 4.30 pm yesterday. He said three suspects, including the intended robbery victim, have been taken into custody.
Three pieces of wood, suspected to have been used in the fatal beating, were also recovered at the scene.
Stabroek News was told that the woman, Mandy Sukhdeo, 28, a Region Three AFC councillor was walking along the Ruby Access Road, when she was confronted by Nazamudeen, who is known to her. The fisherman allegedly attempted to snatch her shoulder bag but a scuffle ensued.
She subsequently ran and informed her father, Surendra Sukhdeo, a Good Hope/Hydronie, NDC APNU councillor, who along with another relative came to her rescue. They confronted Nazamudeen, who had gone into a nearby yard. Upon learning that he was armed with a piece of wood, they reportedly also similarly armed themselves.
They then allegedly dealt Nazamudeen several lashes about his body, including to his head. He then collapsed and they tied his hands with wire and alerted the police.
When police arrived on the scene, Nazamudeen was motionless.
Reports are that around 4.30 pm the woman was returning home from the Parika Health Centre where she works in the dental department when she claimed Nazamudeen called ‘Sheriff’ attempted to grab her bag.
At his home last evening, his relatives told this newspaper that he is familiar with the woman as they live close by. They assumed that he must have jokingly pulled her bag when she raised an alarm that he wanted to steal it.
After the woman raised the alarm, her father ran out with a piece wood to beat the man but he escaped and climbed on top of a house.
The house belonged to Mohamed and Jamilla Munir who were burnt to death inside of it during a botched robbery.
Ironically, Nazamudeen’s eldest brother was among some other men who were charged with their murders.
Meantime, he slid off the roof, apparently by accident and the woman’s father allegedly dealt him a lash to his head and he started to bleed.
All the time he, along with relatives who witnessed the incident, begged the attackers not to injure him further. He ran through the gate but the father and two other persons continued to beat him.
He fell at the corner of the road and someone threw a rope for them to tie him up but they ended up using pieces of wires and bound his hands and feet together.
