A shop owner was yesterday released on $300,000 bail after he was brought before the court and charged with stealing US$5000 in cash, along with some documents from a businessman.
The courtroom of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan heard that, on February 9, at Saffon Street, Charlestown, Dextroy Cordis,
45, of Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara, stole $5000 United States dollars and a quantity of documents from Balchandra Hardowar. Cordis, who was represented by lawyer Adrian Thompson, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Thompson, who asked the court for bail for Cordis, said that his client was picked up by the police on Friday, and was kept for 72 hours. The lawyer said that police have acquired surveillance tapes that do not put his client at the scene. Thompson argued that the police have no evidence linking Cordis to the offence.
However, Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, objected to the accused being granted bail. Jones said that Cordis is under investigation by the police for other matters. The prosecutor also added that he fears if the defendant is released on bail, he will tamper with the witness.
After hearing submissions from both the defence and prosecution, Chief Magistrate McLennan, granted Cordis $300,000 bail. The conditions of his bail are, that he is to report to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday, and lodge his passport with the police.
The matter was adjourned until March 13.
