Hopetown Steelers upset Smythfield Rockers 49-45 in overtime when the Berbice Amateur Basketball Association (BABA) sanctioned Anamayah championships continued Sunday. Locked at 45-45 at the end of the fourth quarter at the Vryman’s Erven Court in New Amsterdam, Hopetown clinched the unlikely win by outscoring Rockers 4-0 in the two minute overtime interval.
Prior to the conclusion, the Steelers took the early lead with the first period ending 17-15. Rockers responded in the second stanza, netting 16 points to Steelers 11 points to enter the half-time break ahead 31-28. Upon resumption, Steelers retook the lead, outhustling Rockers 11-6 to go into the final period ahead at 39-37. However, the contest was pushed into overtime as Rockers scored eight points while restricting Steelers to six points. For the eventual winners, Gerald Allen recorded a game high 18 points, with the next best scorer coming in the form of Neil McDaniels with 10 points. Contributing six and five points were Kelon Webster and Rawle Edwards respectively.
On the other side, veteran Neil Wills led the way with 14 points while Michael Bowen provided able support with 11 points. Chipping in with six points each were Jamal Felix and Steve Ramnarine.
Action in the tournament resumes Sunday at the Fyrish Court, with Rose Hall Town Jammers matching skills with Ithaca Hardliners from 16:00hrs.
