The investigating officer took the stand yesterday when the trial of former director of the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) Carvil Duncan, who is accused of conspiring to steal $27.7 million from the company, began.
It is alleged that Duncan, between May 7th and May 8th, 2015, conspired with another to steal the sum of $27,757,547,
which was the property of GPL. A total of seven witnesses are expected to give evidence in the trial.
Duncan was previously charged with conspiring to steal $984,900 from GPL, but was freed of that charge last year due to insufficient evidence.
His second trial, which is being presided over by Magistrate Fabayo Azore, saw evidence being led yesterday by Assistant Superintendent of Police Kedaranauth Bejaimal, who is stationed at the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters, at Eve Leary, and is attached to the Fraud Squad.
Bejaimal testified about making contact with Duncan on January 25th, 2015, at CID Headquarters and putting the allegation to him in the presence and hearing of a detective. He noted that upon being confronted with the allegation of conspiracy, Duncan stated that he had nothing to say and did not make any statement.
At the end of the officer’s testimony, he was grilled by attorney Glenn Hanoman, who represents Duncan.
The matter was then adjourned to March 14th.
