DCC members up in arms over non-staging of AGM

An interesting situation is developing at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) where a number of concerned club members are peeved at the way things are unfolding at the Queenstown club.

The members yesterday held a press conference at the club where they raised several issues about the state of the club and the fact that current president Alfred Mentore has not called for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and election of office bearers since elections were last held nearly three years ago.

Mentore, at the recent Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Annual General Meeting stated that the club’s elections will be held on or before the 28th of February, 2017.

The members of the club however, said they were concerned with whether the election and meeting will be held since no notice has placed in the newspapers or on the club’s notice board to indicate the holding of the much anticipated elections.

The club’s constitution dictates that those two streams ought to be used to notify members and the public of the elections, two weeks prior to the date of the AGM.

Former president of the club Sherlock `Zegga’ Atwell, speaking at the press conference said: “There is the president, so to say, in Alfred Mentore, but he does not have executives, the only other person he has with him is the secretary Sean Greaves. He doesn’t have a vice-president, treasurer, committee members or none of the same. We have asked the media to be here this evening to ensure that the Annual General Meeting is adhered to which should have been in the month of January in each year.”

Mentore, however, when contacted said: “The election will be called on the 6th of March. The notice was sent to the media. Notice was sent to hold a meeting here (DCC) and it will be held and the elections on the 6th (March).”

The concerned members, however, were still not satisfied with the president’s reassurance since they claim that no notice was seen in any of the newspapers or on the club’s notice board as of yesterday.
