Fresh from landing a sponsorship deal with Yonex, Guyana’s national champion, 18-year-old Narayan Ramdhani, playing for Shuttlesport Badminton Academy, copped two third place finishes in Canada recently.
Competing in the BC Senior Circuit 2 Shuttlesport Senior Open and Under 23 tournaments at Badminton BC, Port Coquitlam, Canada, Ramdhani placed third in the Open men’s singles and the Under-23 men’s doubles.
According to a press release from the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA), he also placed first in the Under-23 mixed-doubles consolation draw.
In the Open men’s singles, Ramdhani defeated Junpeng (James) Qiu: 21-16, 21-10 in the quarter-finals but lost to Laurence Kao 21-16, 13-21, 21-19 in the semi-finals.
In the Under 23 men’s doubles,
Ramdhani and Zach Lu-Ming Fan, the number two seeds, defeated Nester Yang Ning Lin and David Luo 21-16, 17-21, 21-17 in the quarter-finals but lost to Nabil Russell Bennett and Lennart Notni, 21-12, 21-9 in the semi-finals.
In the mixed doubles, Ramdhani and Christina Jieun Woo, the number one seeds, defeated William Poon and Helen Cheung:21-14, 21-16 in the semi-finals and Hayden Wai-Hon Shiu and Yaqun (Jessy) Zheng: 21-15, 14-21, 21-10 in the finals.
According to the release, Ramdhani also participated in the Vancouver Island University, U23 tournament in Nanaimo, British Columbia, placing fifth in the singles.
According to the release, Ramdhani is scheduled to participate in the BC Senior Circuit 1 March 3-5.
Meanwhile Ramdhani recently signed the 2017 Team Yonex Brand contract to become their ambassador for the Yonex Corporation USA and will be exclusively using Yonex rackets, bags, shoes, apparel and accessories supplied by them.
Ramdhani is currently on a five year Badminton scholarship in Vancouver B.C. Canada provided by Shuttlesport Badminton Academy and attending College/University doing a degree in Sports Science.
