Following the first leg of the Burnham Memorial Three-Stage event on Sunday, the nation’s top riders will return to Berbice today to do battle in the ‘Courts Mashramani’ road race.
The roads of Berbice will once again be transformed into a speedway for the wheelsmen who will be vying for cash prizes and trophies in the senior, junior, veteran, juveniles, females and BMX age group categories.
Today’s event gets underway at 09:00hrs with the BMX cyclists competing in a one-mile ride from the Alphonso Square at Tacama turn to the finishing line at Courts in Main Street, New Amsterdam.
The Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) organized fixture, will then see the more senior riders taking centre stage. The big race for the senior and junior riders will roll off in front of the Courts Store and will cover 20 laps around the town of New Amsterdam.
Eight sprint prizes are up for grabs.
The veterans will compete for 10 laps while the juveniles will do five laps. The 12-14 cyclists and the females will ride for two laps.
There will be prizes for the first six senior finishers, five veterans, four juveniles, three females and the top three BMX riders.
Last year’s winner of the senior category was Orville Hinds.
Meanwhile, the second and third legs of the Burnham Memorial road race will take place on Sunday. In the morning, stage two starts in Linden and finishes on Homestretch Avenue, while the finale commences on Homestretch Avenue, proceeds to Belfield and returns to the point of origin for the conclusion. Berbician, Andrew Hicks, is the virtual leader after winning the initial stage.
