Western Tigers resume their storied rivalry with Santos while Guyana Police Force (GPF) engages Winners Connection today in the semi-final round of the Limacol Football Championship, at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda.
The contest between Western Tigers and Santos at 21:00hrs will be the second meeting of the teams thus far in the year, with the former holding the edge, via a comfortable 3-0 win.
The West Ruimveldt unit sealed their place in the final four, after dethroning former champ Milerock by a 1-0 margin in the quarterfinal round in Linden.
The Tigers possess a formidable strike-force consisting of Andrew Murray Jr, Joshua Britton, Devon Millington, Darren Benjamin, Randolph Wagner, Dwayne McLennon, Stellon David and Hubert Pedro.
The duo of Murray Jr, and Joshua Britton lead the way with two goals each, out of the team’s tourney leading seven conversions, while defenders Linden Pickets and Jumane Somerset have contributed one apiece, with an own goal adding to the tally.
Defensively, Western Tigers have conceded thrice. However they are yet to concede in the knockout round following an improved showing from the likes of Cleon Forester, Ryan Adolph, Somerset and Pickets.
For Santos, their place in the semi-final was sealed following a 2-1 win over Mahaica Determinators. Offensively, Santos has recorded six goals.
Keith Caines is the leading scorer with two conversions, while Orin Yarde, Okeene Fraser, Robby McGloggan and Dominique Bobb have each scored once.
From a defensive perspective, the revamped rearguard of Shem Arthur, Vassel Cantzelaar and Troy Lewis, has conceded thrice.
Meanwhile, defence will meet attack when Linden unit Winners Connection oppose GPF in the opening fixture at 19:00hrs.
GPF due to their 2-1 upset win over the highly favoured Den Amstel in the quarterfinal stage, earn the title of favourite heading into the encounter.
The lawmen have fired in seven goals, which is the joint best record in the event. Speedy forward Quincy Holder is the main threat with four goals, while Dwain Jacobs and Dwayne Charles have scored two and one goal, respectively.
On the defensive side, improvements will be required, as the officers have conceded four times.
On the other hand, Winners Connection have excelled in this regard, possessing the best record with only one goal conceded.
Their physical approach has served them well throughout the event and a similar display will be required from the entire team led by Captain Marlon Maximus and Fitzroy Chin.
Although the offence has struggled for fluency, the Lindeners have crafted four goals in as many games, with the quartet of Rene Gibbons, Garey Thompson, Sedrick Hunte and Rawle Gittens each finding the back of the net.
