A Pike Street, Kitty man was yesterday charged with the murder of a vagrant, who was fatally stabbed earlier this month after he attempted to rescue an employee of a Lamaha Street nightclub from an attack by three men.
Shawn Harris, 31, is accused of murdering Sunil Singh, also known as ‘Grey,’ on February 5th, 2017, at Owen Street, Kitty.
The charge was read by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to Harris, who was not required to enter a plea.
Harris, of 131 Pike Street, Kitty, was subsequently remanded to prison until March 20th, 2017.
Police had said that Singh, 42, was fatally knifed by one of the men who had already stabbed a bartender at the Blue Martini nightclub, Charles Valenzuela, 21.
A police statement said that after the club was closed, three men went and attempted to enter but were prevented from doing so by Valenzuela. As Valenzuela made attempts to keep the men out of the premises, an argument ensued, which resulted in him being stabbed by one of the men.
Singh, who was present, the police said, intervened and was trying to make peace when the suspect who stabbed Valenzuela turned and dealt Singh a lash to his head. Singh is then reported to have run north into Railway Street, Kitty with the suspect in pursuit. Singh was then stabbed multiple times around 2.45 am on Owen Street, Kitty, police added.
Singh, Stabroek News was told, was a destitute person who would hang around the area.
Harris was one of the four persons charged in connection with the Bank of Baroda robbery committed at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara on January 22nd, 2016.
He was also sentenced on a drug charge some time back.
