For the past two years when the calendar flips to March the nation’s fittest gladiators lock in to do battle for supremacy in the National Park.
This year will be no different as the trend continues on Sunday with the third installment of the Guyana Fitness Games ‘Fitness Challenge.’
The sum of 36 turbo charged athletes will look to out run, out lift, out jump and outlast each other for the prestigious title of ‘Guyana’s Fittest Man and Woman’.
It will not be easy as it will require maybe some blood, a lot of sweat and perhaps even tears.
Survival of the fittest will also require speed, coordination, aerobic and muscular endurance, experience with Olympic lifts, raw strength, skill, and a healthy serving of guts, determination and power.
The CrossFit-style challenge will be the ultimate test of fitness and athleticism. According to one of the main coordinators and sponsor of the event, Jamie McDonald, the tasks for the athletes will include: Olympic snatches, a combination of running and deadlifts and a mixture of CrossFit style movements like kettle bell swings and pushing sleds.
The five gruelling tasks to be completed will truly push the athletes to their limits when activities get underway at 11:00hrs with a two-mile run.
This year’s event with Kares Engineering Inc. being its main sponsor, promises to be the biggest ever.
Tickets cost $1000 and are available at Fitness Express and your nearest gym.
Last year’s male and female winner, former national table tennis player Dillon Mahadeo and Candace Lynch have signaled their bold intentions of once again being atop the podium steps.
However, human obstacles in the form of Anis Ade Thomas, Carlos Rodrigues, Osmond Mack, Carlos Mendonca, Marino Jeffrey, Marissa Lowden and Semonica Duke stand in their paths.
This year’s staging also comes with a twist with local celebrities like Reon King, Yannick Charles, Vanilla, Kerwin Bollers, Nurriyih Gerrard and others competing in the Scotiabank Celebrity Charity Challenge. The celebrities will challenge themselves for the benefit of charities. Help and Shelter and the Ruimveldt Children’s Home will be the bene-ficiaries. (Emmerson Campbell)
