The new executive of the Guyana Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation Inc., (GBBFFI) has hit the ground running with outreaches in Berbice and Linden yesterday and today.
According to president of the federation Coel Marks, the purpose is: “To create a nexus between corporate Guyana and athletes in the hope we can get some level of commitment between both parties.”
Besides the outreaches, Marks noted “We’re currently trying to get onboard with the NSC’s new initiative geared at digitizing and combining the varying sports disciplines in Guyana. The hope is that it’ll create a wider platform to build popularity of the sport. The upside to that is that it is under the auspices of the government and they will shoulder the burden of maintaining the cost to upkeep.”
The businessman, who ascended to the helm of the GBBFFI two weeks ago following the body’s Annual General Meeting, told Stabroek Sport yesterday that creating an incentive programme for coaches was one of the many initiative discussed by the members of the federation since taking office.
“One of the initiatives we want to implement is to create an incentivized programme with local trainers at the gym. Since they’re the ones that oversee the budding athletes, we want to see if there is a way the federation can lend support to trainers so they can identify and assist in nurturing the talent as they recognize the potential. With that identification the federation will try to utilize the resources available to facilitate the nurturing.”
While the aforementioned is about the administrative plans, high on the agenda is the hosting of the Novices Championship. The April 22 fixture scheduled for the Theatre Guild will be the first litmus test of the federation’s ability to host an event. (Emmerson Campbell)
