Cycling fans are in for a treat this weekend and Phagwah Day, as three events are organized for the city, and the open roads of all three counties.
Guyana’s premier wheelsmen will first renew their rivalry in the inner circuit of the National Park on Saturday with the staging of the Diamond Mineral Water 11-race cycle program. The event which pedals off at 09:00hrs will be headlined with the 35-lap open race which was won by Orville Hinds last year.
The Linden based rider took the spoils in a time of one hour, 19 minutes, 58 seconds.
A new junior champion will be crowned in this division since last year’s winner Raphael Leung has moved up in the ranks, while Junior Niles will look to defend the veteran’s category.
On Sunday, the riders take their talents to the West Side to compete in the second Cheddi Jagan Memorial Road Race for the season. The first which was staged last Sunday in Berbice, commenced in New Amsterdam, proceeded to No. 55 Village, and returned to Port Mourant, with Shaquel Agard taking the honours.
Sunday’s 50-mile race starts at 08:00hrs in front of the Wales Police Station, proceeds to Bushy Park, Parika, and returns to the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.
Team Coco’s Hamza Eastman is the defending champion of the senior category, while Christopher Griffith had taken the junior title when the event was last held in 2015. Niles, again, is the defending champion in the veteran division.
The curtain comes down on the three events in the Ancient County with the fourth Annual ‘Benjamin Sports Store’50-mile race.
The Phagwah Day fixture organized by the Flying Ace Cycle Club gets off to an explosive start at 10:00hrs from Fyrish Village, Corentyne. The peloton will proceed to the No.51 Police Station and return to the point of origin for the finish.
