The Golden Jaguars senior setup has moved five places in the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA)/Coca-Cola Rankings to 131st, after the latest standings were released yesterday by the world body.
Due to the rankings, Guyana remain in the 18th position among the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) of 41 nations. Similarly, in the smaller Caribbean Football Union (CFU) rankings which feature 25 countries, Guyana is positioned ninth.
According to an official release from the Guyana Football Federation, President Wayne Forde said, “We look forward to the opportunity to drive Guyana’s senior men’s team towards the top 100 this year, as the Guyana Football Federation plans to organize several international friendly matches in 2017.” The ranking system was introduced in 1992 to assess the quality of national teams based on performances during a four year period. The system uses a ‘weighting’ structure to allocate points based on significant matches and opponents.
