A Jamaican man fingered in the plot to kill a popular Rose Hall businessman was arrested yesterday at Moleson Creek, Corentyne, Berbice when he returned to Guyana.
According to Commander of ‘B’ Division Ian Amsterdam, the other three persons who were placed under arrest on Thursday are still in police custody, as investigators are putting the pieces together.
According to the police, the Jamaican is allegedly the main man behind of the plot to execute the businessman.
The alleged hitman, who is from New Amsterdam, was arrested after a detective observed his suspicious behaviour.
The alleged hitman who was riding a motorcycle had collided with a car on the public road at Albion, Corentyne. But when he asked a car driver for a drop to Hampshire and left his motorcycle on the road, the detective began following him. The alleged hitman exited the car in Hampshire and on seeing the detective threw a loaded gun into a nearby trench. He was arrested and the gun, a .38 revolver, with four rounds was retrieved from the trench.
While in custody, the alleged hitman reportedly told investigators that the Jamaican man had hired him to carry out a robbery on the businessman and kill him in the process. He also named two other persons, who were involved in the plot. The two other persons have since been arrested and according to Amsterdam the gun is suspected to belong to one of those persons.
In a previous interview, Amsterdam had stated that the businessman was reportedly in business with the Jamaican. Amsterdam also previously stated that according to the alleged hitman, the businessman owed a sum of money to the Jamaican and this was why a hit was put out on him.
However, speaking to the businessman on Friday, he stated that he was not in business with the Jamaican, but was close friends with the Jamaican and his boss. The businessman said that while he was taking extra precautions since becoming aware of the situation, he did not believe his “friends” would hatch a plan to kill him. He also denied owing money to the Jamaican.
Meanwhile, Amsterdam said that while they were able to “save a life”, investigators are now working diligently to uncover the truth.
