Dear Editor,
While Guyanese and other Caribbean nationals are proud of Gina Miller for successfully challenging Brexit, she is suffering harsh criticism and threats for her action. However, the Guyana High Commission has recognized her courage and sacrifice and has arranged an evening of discussion with Trevor Phillips, the President of the John Lewis Partnership, who is one of the best known black faces on British Television.
The announcement of the March 28 discussion was well received, so much so that within 24 hours all the tickets for admission were sold out.
Gina Miller is a newsmaker par excellence. She took the British government to court over Brexit and triggering Article 50 to leave the European Union without parliamentary approval. She won her case in the High Court and it then went to the Supreme Court (the highest court) in December. They delivered the judgment on January 24. The government lost which meant Parliament had to vote on Brexit.
Ms Miller is Guyanese by birth, the daughter of Doodnauth Singh, former Attorney General of Guyana and Gecom Chair. Ms Miller went to the UK at the age of 10 to be educated at Moira House Girls School. She studied law, but left without completing her finals because her parents were unable to send funds owing to the foreign exchange laws in her homeland. However, she gained a degree in marketing and an MSc in human resource management at the University of London.
Ms Miller who is 51 years of age, operates a hedge fund in London with her husband. She is the mother of three.
Yours faithfully,
Oscar Ramjeet
