Three bandits, who were all armed, attacked a New Amsterdam market vendor during the wee hours of yesterday morning.
According to the woman, who asked not to be named, she had just opened her door sometime around 4.30 am, as she prepared to go out, when the three men, who were masked, entered her home. “I just open the door and when I look up I see a red pants and the man get a gun,” the woman told Stabroek News. She said that the two other perpetrators were armed with knives. She added that the gunman was shirtless.
She explained that she immediately sounded an alarm and her neighbour asked what had happened, which led to the gunman running into her house, grabbing two of her bags and running out.
After hearing her screams, the woman’s son and other family members ran out of their rooms. However, by then the bandits had already managed to scale the fence and run into the cane fields.
The woman said her bags did not have any valuables, although one did contain her medical documents. She said residents chased after the men and found one of her bags on the dam in the canefield.
Commander of ‘B’ Division Ian Amsterdam told Stabroek News yesterday that police were hunting for a gang of thieves who matched the description of the three men who invaded the female vendor’s home. No arrest had been made up to press time.
