Dear Editor,
Currently, the recreational park in Anna Regina which was commissioned almost a decade ago in memory of the late President Dr Cheddi Jagan is in quite a deplorable state. The physical structures are almost useless as a result of the deterioration and it is preventing children from enjoying themselves there. The park is virtually abandoned except for the animals. Even though it is situated in the township and has great significance it has remained in this state for almost three years languishing in obscurity. Quite recently there was a ceremony there to commemorate Dr Jagan’s death anniversary, and while there were flowing tributes, much was left to be desired in terms of the surroundings in which Dr Jagan was being remembered.
It is in this context therefore, that I was extremely heartened when I learnt that the park will be rehabilitated by the Regional Administration of Region 2. This is a magnanimous gesture and I believe it is being done in the national interest as a boost to social cohesion in duly recognizing the legacy of one of the founding political leaders of this country. The park should be further developed and become a tourist attraction. Along with several other infrastructural contracts the rehabilitation of the park was recently tendered and the contract will soon be awarded. I am pleased that Dr Cheddi Jagan’s play park has been made a priority.
Yours faithfully,
Elroy Stephney
