The taxi driver accused of causing the death of passenger Camille Pereira, who died after their car collided with another vehicle along Croal Street in 2015, was found not guilty yesterday.
City magistrate Fabayo Azore dismissed the charge against Shaquille Browne at the conclusion of his trial for the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
The accident, which occurred on December 24th, 2015, at Croal Street, claimed the life of Pereira, 18, of Lot II Bent Street, Wortmanville. The other occupants of the cab sustained minor injuries.
According to Magistrate Azore, there was no direct evidence led through the prosecution’s witnesses to determine whether the vehicle Browne was travelling in was speeding or that he drove in a manner that was dangerous to the public. She noted that it was clear that a vehicle swerving in front of the Browne’s taxi resulted in him swerving, which in turn led to the accident. As a result, the magistrate held that the prosecution did not prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt and Browne was found not guilty of the crime.
