The City Engineer’s Department is currently looking at an application made by call centre Teleperformance to operate a parking lot for employees, a source has told Stabroek News.
At the end of January, a team from the City Council destroyed two concrete ramps on the pavements outside the entrances to a parking lot on Camp and Church streets, which the company had started using.
At the time the council was rolling out metered parking in the city, but the company had told this newspaper that the plan for the parking lot was long in the pipelines and it was just a matter of coincidence that it was ready for use when metered parking was introduced in the city.
“They [Teleperformance] didn’t apply for permission and they were given notice in November when the council recognized that they had started,” City Hall’s Public Relations Officer Debra Lewis had told Stabroek News.
When asked in December if permission had been granted by the City Council for the establishment of the parking lot, an official from the company had said said yes, while adding that the company had followed all protocols.
However, the source related to Stabroek News that at present the issue is being sorted out and until that is completed, the company cannot use the parking lot.
Efforts made by Stabroek News to contact officials from Teleperformance were futile.
Concerns had been raised that the city had only cracked down on the parking lot because it could have undermined the metered parking project.
