Ten of 30 boat operators who received training have been licensed to operate in the Upper Mazaruni area.
According to a press release from the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), the 30 operators were drawn from Quebanang, Waramadong, Jawalla, Phillipi, Kako and Kamarang. Director of Maritime Safety, MARAD, John Flores, encouraged them to practice the river safety rules while traversing the waterways.
A Deputy River Navigation Officer from MARAD, David Mittelholzer highlighted to the operators the importance of the river navigation regulations which are currently in effect in the riverain areas, the release said. Non-adherence to these regulation can lead to prosecution, Mittelholzer admonished.
At the end of the training, ten operators who had fulfilled the requirement, were granted certification and given licences to operate in the Upper Mazaruni area.
Meanwhile, a team from MARAD’s Safety Division also visited the New Amsterdam and Rosignol areas in Region Six on March 2017, on an outreach which involved the issuance of licences to fishermen in that area.
