A West Coast Demerara man was on Monday remanded to prison after being charged with stealing over $2.6 million in cash and valuables from a pensioner.
Jason Vassey, 33, of Hague, West Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to a charge when he was arraigned at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court
The charge stated that Vassey, in the company of another, broke and entered the dwelling house of 68-year-old Kamrul Hasan.
The attack was said to have occurred on March 27, at Hasan’s Hague residence, from where two cell phones, valued $170,000; $980,000 worth of gold jewellery, two hunting knives, valued $20,000, and $1,487,000 in both local and foreign currency were taken. The total value of what was taken was $2,639,000.
Vassey was taken into custody and subsequently charged after fingerprints found at the scene matched his.
His next hearing is slated for April 24 at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
