MAPM ready to mobilise if metered parking reinstated on current contract

Dear Editor,

The Movement Against Parking Meters (MAPM) notes with concern certain statements made by the Minister of Communities, Mr Ronald Bulkan in an interview with HGPTV Nightly News and carried on the said news broadcast on March 27, 2017. We would like to draw attention particularly to the statement to the effect that the current three-month suspension of the Georgetown Metered Parking By-laws is in order to facilitate a “renegotiation” of the contract entered into between the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown and Smart City Solutions (SCS) “on a more equitable formula”. In light of this statement, MAPM wishes to reiterate and renew its call for a complete revocation of the said contract, which is illegal ab initio, having been unlawfully entered into in breach of tendering and procurement legislation, among other illegalities and irregularities.

Further, the said statement is in conflict with the Ministry of Finance review of the aforesaid contract, of which the Minister made mention, and which concluded that the said contract should be rescinded and not “renegotiated”.

MAPM remains watchful and ready to mobilize should the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown and/or Smart City Solutions seek to reinstate a metered parking system in the City of Georgetown on the aforesaid illegal contract.

Yours faithfully,

Raquel Thomas
