Alex Cheeks secured the first major upset of the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Toucan Distributors Junior Skill Level Championship, defeating Caribbean U19 Girls runner-up Taylor Fernandes on Thursday at the Georgetown Club Facility.
Cheeks clinched the unlikely result in 3-1 via 11-5, 11-9, 11-13, 11-7 score. In Category-B, Makeda Harding edged Samuel Ince-Carvalhal 6 – 11, 11 – 8, 6 – 11, 11 – 8, 11 – 9 while Sarah Lewis defeated Maya Collins 9 – 11, 14 – 12, 11 – 3, 11 – 3.
In other results, Abosaide Cadogan squeaked past Dominic Collins 11 – 3, 10 – 12, 11 – 5, 11 – 7 and Kirsten Gomes downed Aliyah Persaud 11 – 3, 11 – 3, 11 – 3 in Category-C.
The lone Category-D fixture witnessed Mohyryan Baksh beat Haley Carpenter 11 – 5, 11 – 5, 11 – 1. In Category-E, Nicholas Verwey beat Chad De Abreu 11 – 5, 11 – 7 while Dhiren Persaud edged Angel Rahim 12 – 10, 11 – 8 and Aishani Persaud overcame Rayad Boyce 11 – 7, 11 – 7.
In Category-H, Joshua Verwey downed Christiana Fernandes 11 – 2, 11 – 4 and Javed Saul 11 – 5, 13 – 11 while Noah Rahaman defeated Grant Fernandes 11 – 9, 11 – 6 and Saul bested Christiana Fernandes 11 – 7, 11 – 8.
