The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has recommended murder charges against the suspects who were detained by police over the killings of miners Phillip Cort and Reginald Charles.
According to Commander of ‘F’ Division Ravendradat Budhram, the cases files were sent to the DPP Chambers for advice and they were returned with directions to institute charges.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court today.
On Wednesday last, Charles, 30, sustained stab wounds to his neck and chest and died while receiving medical attention at the Mahdia Hospital.
According to reports Charles was walking in the vicinity of a nightclub around 2 am at 111 Miles Mahdia, Region Eight, when he got involved in a confrontation with the suspects. During this, he was stabbed with a broken bottle.
Swift action by the police resulted in the arrest of the suspects. One of the men, a 24-year-old who hails from Surama Village in Region Nine confessed to the crime.
Meanwhile, Cort, 55, of Arimu Falls Top Landing, Cuyuni, and formerly of 32 Queen Street, Courtland, Corentyne, Berbice, was found in his tent on Monday last, with multiple marks of violence.
The Cuyuni miner was allegedly murdered after an altercation with another miner over missing gold.
