A fish vendor was killed yesterday afternoon on the Le Ressouvenir Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD) after he was struck down by an alleged speeding driver.
Dead is Nazeem Ally called ‘Boy’, 56, a father of three who resides at Lot 9 Cherry Field, La Bonne Intention, ECD. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
While details surrounding the accident which occurred around 5pm yesterday remain sketchy, Stabroek News understands that motor vehicle, PTT 1121, was proceeding east along the Le Ressouvenir Railway Embankment at a fast rate when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle. During the process, he reportedly lost control and struck down Ally who was walking on the said road.
The driver was taken into custody and is assisting the police with investigations.
Mark Ally, a nephew of the dead man, said that at the time of the incident, his uncle was returning home from work.
The man said he learnt of the accident after receiving a telephone call from a friend. However, when he arrived at the scene, Nazeem had already been taken to the hospital. “I hear he was bleeding a lot and the driver took him to the hospital but by time we got there he was already dead”, Mark said.
He explained that eyewitnesses related to him that the driver of the vehicle was speeding and was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. “Persons at the scene told me that he stop like 100 feet away after he hit down my uncle and then pick him up and take him to the hospital”, he said. Investigations are ongoing.
