Uitvlugt Warriors were crowned the Super-4 Massive Easter football champions after edging Eagles FC of Stewartville 2-1 Sunday evening at the Den Amstel Community Centre ground, West Demerara.
Earning a berth to the final following a semifinal victory over home side Den Amstel, rising star Daniel Floy handed Uitvlugt the perfect start in the 80 minute showdown, directing his effort into the back of net with only six minutes on the clock.
The sizeable crowd, comprising mostly of Uitvlugt supporters, were in a celebratory mood following the conversion by Floy and fancied their team’s chances of clinching the title.
However, they were silenced in the 33rd minute by a fearless Eagles unit, who clinched their berth to the grand finale at the expense of Pouderoyen, via a Daniel Clarke conversion.
Nevertheless, Uitvlugt had the final say in the matchup as eventual tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) Trayon Bobb made his presence felt, recording what proved to be the winner four minutes later.
With the win, Uitvlugt walked away with $100,000 while Eagles pocketed $50,000. Bobb for his MVP accolade, collected $20,000.
In the third place playoff, which lasted the duration of 60 minutes, Den Amstel downed Pouderoyen 2-0. Goals from Dwayne St. Kitts and Keswyn Fraser in the 29th and 46th minute respectively sealed the outcome.
For their efforts, Den Amstel walked away with $20,000. In the earlier semifinals, Uitvlugt squeaked past hosts Den Amstel 1-0 with Bobb once again the difference on the night as he found the back of the net in the 32nd minute while Eagles edged traditional giant Pouderoyen 3-2 on penalty kicks after regulation time ended scoreless. Both semifinals were played for 40 minutes.
Meeting the teams before the commencement of the final were Director of Sport, Christopher Jones, Guyana Police Force D-Division Commander Leslie James and Guyana Football Federation Third Vice President Attorney-at-Law Thandi McAllister.
