A man, who allegedly threatened to shoot at a police constable, was yesterday morning shot dead by the rank.
Dead is Shaka Bourne, of Yarakita Village, North West District, who was rushed to the Mabaruma Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival after being shot to the head.
According to a Guyana Police Force press release, Bourne pointed a loaded firearm at the police constable, who shot and killed him with his service revolver.
The police said enquiries disclosed that the constable had responded to several reports made against Bourne, including of reported threats, by members on the community.
Bourne, police said, on seeing the rank immediately drew a loaded unlicensed revolver and threatened to shoot the constable, who instinctively discharged a round from his service revolver.
Stabroek News was told that Bourne’s mother allegedly made several reports to the constable after her son threatened to kill her.
As a result, the constable, who was armed with a .38 revolver, contacted Bourne and told him of the reports made against him.
It was during this time that Bourne allegedly pulled out a handgun from the waist of his pants and threatened to kill the police constable, who shot him instead.
The unlicensed firearm and the service weapon used by the rank have since been lodged with police.
A “thorough investigation” of the incident has since been launched by Divisional Commander, Senior Superintendent Ravindradat Budhram, the police added.
