A 23-year-old man was shot on Friday afternoon during an exchange of gunfire with police, shortly after he and an accomplice allegedly robbed a Bourda Market vendor of $400,000 as he was about to enter his Kitty, Georgetown residence.
The injured man has been identified as Nykose Gritten known as “Boney” and “Skull” of Lot 29 Laing Avenue, La Penitence. He was shot once to his right foot and is currently a patient at the Georgetown Police Hospital under police guard. His condition is listed as stable.
The police in a press release on the incident which occurred around 14:45 hrs, said enquiries disclosed that the 56-year-old vendor left his business place for home in a taxi.
As he was about to open his gate, the police said, the suspects, one of whom was armed with a handgun, approached on a motorcycle and pounced on the
vendor relieving him of the cash. The men made good their escape east along Pike Street, Kitty.
The statement further stated that the matter was reported to the police and within minutes, ranks on mobile patrol responded and confronted the bandits, who discharged several rounds in their direction. “The police returned fire hitting one of the suspect who fell and his accomplice managed to escape,” the release noted.
However, acting on information received, the ranks proceeded to a house in Duncan Street, where a search was conducted and an unlicensed revolver with two live rounds and one spent shell was unearthed.
Six persons, including two women one of whom is said to be the girlfriend of Gritten, who were in the house at the time was taken into custody, the police said.
