An 18-year-old prisoner, Kishan Jeriwan, was rush-ed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital on Satur-day, after he sustained several stab wounds in a fight with a fellow inmate.
Two other inmates were also rushed to the hospital with injuries sustained in the same melee.
Commander of ‘B’ Division Ian Amsterdam confirmed the incident to Stabroek News and noted that an investigation has since been launched. He also stated that one prisoner is still hospitalized.
According to information gathered, on Saturday in the prison’s mess hall, inmate Quincy Goodhart, 25, allegedly approached Jeriwan enquiring about phone credit for a cellular phone. An argument erupted between them during which Goodhart allegedly dealt Jeriwan a punch to his face. Jeriwan left the mess hall and returned with a piece of wood, which he reportedly used to deal Goodhart lashes about his body. Goodhart then reportedly pulled out an improvised weapon and stabbed Jeriwan four times about his body.
In the process of the fight another inmate Joshua Sewchan, 20, who was convicted over trafficking cocaine, also sustained injuries.
The men were all admitted to hospital on Saturday. However, as of yesterday afternoon, only one inmate remained a patient at the hospital.
Meanwhile, Stabroek News was told that Jeriwan is serving a two-year sentence for break and enter and larceny, while Goodhart is serving three years for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
