Two years after a vehicular accident claimed the life of his wife, Safraz Amir was yesterday charged with causing her death.
Amir, 37, was read a charge which alleged that on March, 8, 2015, at the Lethem trail, he drove minivan PRR 7631 and caused the death of Vimala Balgobin, who was the Project Coordinator for the Rural Enterprise and Agricultural Deve-lopment Project at the Ministry of Agriculture.
Amir, of Mahaica, denied the charge after it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in a Georgetown court.
According to his attorney, Jerome Khan, Amir has already suffered due to the loss of his wife. The attorney, who said the case against his client is weak, requested that he be released on reasonable bail.
Police prosecutor Arvin Moore told the court that there was no objection to bail but requested that it be substantial.
Chief Magistrate McLennan subsequently set bail at $200,000 bail and adjourned the matter to June 6, when it will be heard at the Lethem court.
Balgobin, who was also a member of the Guyana Marketing Corporation’s Board of Directors, had been conducting training on women’s empowerment in remote locations.
She and Amir were in the vehicle when it crashed along a bridge.
