The cane cutter, who allegedly chopped off the hand of a police constable on Sunday, was yesterday charged with attempted murder and remanded to prison when he appeared before the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
Warren Dennis, of Beterverwagt-ing (BV), East Coast Demerara, yesterday stood before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul, and was read a charge which stated that on, April 23, at Quamina Road, (BV), he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Alana Hazel with intent to commit murder. Dennis, who appeared unrepresented by an attorney, was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Magistrate Ally-Seepaul, later remanded Dennis to prison, as the matter was adjourned until May 8.
According to reports, Hazel, 28, a police constable who is attached to the Police Officers’ Mess, Eve Leary, was on her way to give her son some school supplies, on Sunday afternoon, when Dennis allegedly attacked her. The accused and Hazel share several children together.
After the attack, Dennis made good his escape but was later taken to the police by his brother. Hazel, who is still a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital, suffered from several chop wounds about her body and her left wrist was severed.
