Dear Editor,
City Hall is one of the most beautiful buildings in Guyana if not in the wider Caribbean. It is an amazing piece of architectural work. Why it was left to deteriorate by the authorities over the several decades is beyond comprehension. It certainly does not speak well of our collective sense of national patrimony and pride.
I am pleased that the European Union has agreed to come to the rescue of this ageing structure which was constructed since the early years of colonial rule. The architectural landscape of the city still depicts our colonial past even though the face of the city is gradually changing with the construction of a few high rise buildings.
I cannot wait to see substantial works commence to renovate and preserve this historic structure and prevent it from further decay. The gesture by the European Union is most welcome and could not have come at a better time.
Yours faithfully,
Hydar Ally
