KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, CMC – Barbados brushed aside Windward Islands to take control of the Women’s Regional Super50 while Trinidad and Tobago kept Jamaica winless, following the fourth round of the competition here yesterday.
In a clash of the tournament’s two unbeaten teams, Barbados used their potent pace attack to good effect to set up a comfortable by six-wicket victory at Arnos Vale Stadium, and leapfrog their opponents to the top of the points standings. Sent in, Windwards were restricted to 83 all out off 24.3 overs, with Nerissa Crafton getting 26 and Quiana Joseph, 25.
West Indies fast bowler Shamilia Connell extended her excellent form in the tournament by grabbing four for 15 from six overs while new-ball partner Shakera Selman, who also wears international colours, supported with two for 16.
The pair ripped the heart out of the Windwards with a devastating opening burst, reducing the innings to the strife of 15 for six in the 10th over before Crafton and Joseph put on a face-saving 58 for the eighth wicket.
In reply, Kyshona Knight steered Barbados to victory with an unbeaten 28 from 26 deliveries including four boundaries while teenaged West Indies opener Hayley Matthews chipped in with 24, in a 37-run opening stand with Kycia Knight (13). Windies leg-spinner Afy Fletcher picked up three for 19.
At Park Hill, T&T condemned the Stafanie Taylor-led Jamaica to their fourth straight defeat with a nine-run verdict.
In a game reduced to 24 overs per side, T&T rallied to 111 for eight off 24 overs with opener Reniece Boyce top-scoring with an unbeaten 31 off 38 deliveries with three fours and two sixes.
She put on 45 for the first wicket with Felicia Walters (13) before becoming the first casualty in the 11th over. Jamaica were making a fist of it at 49 for one in the ninth over when Rashada Williams (15) and Shanel Daley (17) were involved in a 33-run stand.
But three wickets – including that of Taylor for three – fell for eight runs in the space of 26 deliveries and it was left to Chinelle Henry (18) and Chedean Nation (16) to revive the innings in a fifth wicket stand of 31.However, just when victory seemed to be beckoning, Jamaica suffered another slump, losing five wickets for eight runs to derail the run chase.
