DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, CMC – Batsman Roston Chase and fast bowler Alzarri Joseph were two of the biggest movers in the latest International Cricket Council player rankings released yesterday, with both achieving career-best positions.
The 25-year-old Chase jumped 21 spots to 70th in the batting rankings, on the backs of his half-century in the West Indies first innings of the opening Test against Pakistan which ended Monday at Sabina Park in Jamaica.
West Indies lost the game by seven wickets with Chase ending on 16 not out in the second innings, as the Caribbean side suffered a meltdown on the final day.
Captain Jason Holder, who also gathered a first innings half-century, moved up five places to a career-best 60th in the rankings while wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich, the third half-century maker for West Indies, eased one place up to 63rd.
Opener Kraigg Brathwaite, who failed in both innings, is the highest ranked Windies batsman at 25th.
There was no change to the top three as Australian star Steve Smith continued to lead the rankings with New Zealander Kane Williamson and England’s Joe Root lying second and third respectively.
In the bowling, meanwhile, 20-year-old Joseph made great progress by leaping 22 spots to a career-best 73rd. The right-armer bowled impressively in the just concluded Test, taking three wickets in the first innings and one of the three to fall in Pakistan’s second innings.
His new-ball partner Shannon Gabriel also finished with four wickets in the match to jump seven places to a career-best 33rd.
The highest ranked West Indies bowler is seamer Kemar Roach at 25th, and he has not played a Test in 15 months.
India off-spinner Ravi Ashwin is the top-ranked bowler on the list.
