A year-long prison sentence and a $1M fine were on Thursday handed down to Eloy Livan for using a fake licence plate on his car.
Livan, 28, of Lot 47 Richards Town, Lusignan, East Coast Demerara and also ‘C’ Field, Sophia, was one of three men, including an ex-police officer, who were held last year after they led police on a brief high speed chase in the city.
Magistrate Annette Singh handed down the sentence to Livan at the conclusion of his trial, where she found him guilty based on the evidence that was presented.
It was alleged that on November 14th, 2016, at Lamaha and Republic streets, Georgetown, Livan fraudulently placed a fake licence plate, HC 7294 on a motorcar, which was registered under HB 7412.
The matter was prosecuted by Sergeant Gillian Simons.
Livan, ex-policeman Devon Chase, and Fredrick Boyce were charged after they were nabbed by police at the conclusion of the high speed chase, which ended when the car went into a trench at Lamaha and Republic streets.
The police had received information that men in a car were about to commit a crime. Shortly after, a heavily-tinted car, matching the description given to the police, was seen and the police gave chase. Livan was said to be the owner and driver of the vehicle.
When the vehicle was searched, a 9mm Taurus pistol and 12 rounds of matching ammunition were recovered. Chase subsequently pleaded guilty to weapons charges and he was later sentenced to four years in jail, while the charge against Livan and Boyce was dismissed.
