Onions were reaped on April 28, 2017 from a trial plot at Saint John, West Coast Berbice, Region 5 as part of a Canada-funded PROPEL programme.
On March 26th there had been a similar reaping from a trial plot at a Nurney, Corentyne.
A press release from the programme said that WUSC Caribbean (Guyana) Inc carried out the April 28 exercise at St John. The event was attended by approximately 30 farmers, some of whom were already part of the PROPEL/NAREI onion trials while the rest were farmers who were interested in pursuing cultivation.
Farmers had the opportunity to share their onion planting experiences and were enthused at participating in the reaping of the trial plot which is owned by Gaylann McPherson.
McPherson said that she was very proud of her accomplishment and plans to continue and expand her onion production.
In March there was a similar reaping at Otis Victor’s farm in Nurney.
The onion trial is one of the Canada-funded PROPEL (Promotion of Regional Opportunities for Produce Through Enterprises and Linkages) project initiatives being carried out in collaboration with the National Agriculture Research & Extension Institute (NAREI). Both onions and potatoes are being tried. Onions and potatoes are two of the country’s major agricultural imports.
