Woodpecker Hikers overcame a 1-0 deficit to secure a 1-1 draw with rising force Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Spartans when the Woodpecker Products women’s first division hockey league continued Saturday.
It was the second meeting of the teams with the first round encounter ending 2-0 in favour of Hikers.
Despite starting the fixture as the clear favourite, Hikers found themselves behind the ‘eight ball’ at the St. Stanislaus College ground in the 37th minute.
With the first period ending scoreless mainly through determined defending by the emerging Spartans unit, Sandy Roopnarine handed her side the lead as she slotted home to cap off a brilliant counterattack.
However, Spartans lead proved to be brief as Tekeisha DeLeon netted six minutes later placing her shot past the opposing custodian inside the penalty circle, after latching onto a pass from Marisha Fernandes.
With the result, Hikers remain in second position after receiving a point for the drawn encounter while Spartans collected their first point of the contest for their efforts.
