The minibus drivers involved in the fatal accident along the Le Ressouvenir Public Road, East Coast Demerara, on Sunday morning, are still hospitalised.
Commander of ‘C’ Division Kevin Adonis yesterday told Stabroek News that due to the hospitalisation of Winston Belgrave and Jagdeo Singh, the police have yet to receive statements from them.
Subsequent to the head-on collision that claimed the life of Clive Hercules, 53, of Canal Number Two Polder, West Bank Demerara, Belgrave, who was driving PTT 7715 and Singh, who was driving BPP 1340, were rescued and rushed to the hospital.
Belgrave, 45, of Laing Avenue, was taken to the Woodlands Hospital and admitted in a semi-conscious state, while Singh, 37, of Lusignan, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and admitted as a patient.
Hercules was travelling with Belgrave at the time of the accident.
Caleb Henry, 24 and Raphael Khemraj, 21, both of Lusignan, who were travelling in Singh’s bus, were treated at the GPHC and released.
The police had explained that their inquiries revealed that the driver of PTT 7715 was proceeding west when he was blinded by two bright lights from a vehicle coming in the opposite direction and into his lane. This led Belgrave to pull into the corner of the road in an effort to allow BPP 1340 to pass. However, the vehicles collided head-on.
Fire-fighters were summoned to the scene after first responders were unable to rescue Hercules, who was pinned in the front passenger seat of Belgrave’s vehicle.
Hercules was freed from the vehicle approximately one hour after the accident occurred, eyewitnesses said, and was later pronounced dead on arrival at the GPHC.
